Photos from Semana Santa
Below are some photos from this past week, Semana Santa. I will be posting more about the history and significance of what is done here in Spain for Semana Santa. For now here are some photos.
The first photo is of a penitent with grafitti behind it. I have not yet posted about this, but Granada has a wonderful tradition of street art in the form of grafitti and I like the juxtaposition between the traditional parts of Granada culture and the modern.
The second photo is of the costaleros. They are the people who carry the statues through the streets. The weight of the statues, usually about a ton, rests on their necks in most cases.
The third of the statue brought down from the Alhambra. It's in the long, steep street that leads up to the Alhambra. It's a beautiful site due to all the trees.
The fourth photo is from the Gitano - gypsy - procession. One thing that set the Gitanos apart during Semana Santa is that they set off flares. It is because of the flare that the photo is all red.
The last photo, for now anyway, is of a penitent from the Silent Procession who walked for the entire procession carrying a cross and wearing chains strapped to his ankle. The photo is of the chains.
Tomorrow I will post more photos and greater explanation of what goes on in the procession, complete with Spanish vocabulary.
